Better Outcomes with Hesrt Surger

Cardiopulmonary Bypass or CPB entails the use of the heart lung machine. This machine performs the work of the heart and lungs, thus maintaining circulation while we perform surgery on the heart. This concept was developed by Dr John Gibbon in the 1950s & continues to be refined. The elements of CPB are also used to support the circulation when the lungs &/or heart are struggling with the modification known as ECMO (extra corporeal membrane oxygenation). This device saved many lives during the Covid pandemic.

This image shows a sheep being supported with CPB. We are using a range of experiments to optimize flow, pressure, medications, adjuncts such as zinc, megadose Vitamin C, etc to help support the circulation better, thereby improving outcomes.
